Residual Stresses from Manufacturing

Uncertainty Quantification of Residual Stress Evolution during Machining and Heat Treating:

We are studying the flow stress behavior of AISI 9310 gear steel at different manufacturing stages.  9310 steel is typically rough machined prior to carburizing.  During machining, carburizing, and hardening, significant residual stresses can develop in the part.  Distortion during heat treating and finish machining can lead to loss of dimensional tolerance.  Understanding the fundamental properties of the material during manufacturing will allow us to better predict materials behavior during processing.  This is part a of a larger collaborative study with the Research in Advanced Manufacturing group funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Residual Stress Development during Machining of Ti alloys

Controlled machining experiments of heat treated titanium α / β alloys allow characterization of residual stresses.  Residual stresses are affected by tool path and machining conditions as well as prior microstructure of the samples.
